Batasan Bombing

Ang Batasan bombing naman ay naganap isang araw bago humarap si Pampanga Governor Panlilio to testify on the bribery in the Senate and the day before the House Justice Committee Hearing on the impeachment case.. (nagkataon lang siguro?)

Batasan bombing: Who did it?

MANILA, Philippines--As an institution, the Philippine Marine Corps couldn’t have been behind the death of Basilan Rep. Wahab Akbar.
But here’s my educated guess: It was done by individual members to avenge the death of 10 comrades after an ambush in Basilan in July.
The Marines suspected it was Akbar’s men who beheaded and mutilated their dead after they strayed into the territory of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in search of a kidnapped Italian priest.
The ambush was allegedly staged by both the MILF and Akbar’s men.But the mutilation of the dead soldiers was reportedly the work of the late congressman’s goons.
I talked with some Marines who expressed bitterness over what they considered to be the government’s apathy towards the death of their comrades in Basilan.
“Di namin palalampasin ang ginawa nila, Sir (They won’t get away with it),” a Marine enlisted man told me several days after the ambush.
The Marine Corps, like its counterparts in other countries, is a fraternity. You oppress one member, the entire group goes after you.
The victims of the Basilan ambush in July were members of the Recon Battalion, the Corps’ commando unit. The crème de la crème.
Recon members are experts in surveillance and demolition operations.
The Marines used to guard the Batasan complex, so they had the run of the place.
They have since been replaced by the Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police.
“Mon, it’s a pity that innocent people were killed or wounded in the bombing,” said a Marine officer, commenting on the death of Akbar.
But it’s a reality in war that civilians get killed, the officer added.
If I may venture another guess, the bombing was done inside the Batasan complex probably to send a message. Most congressmen get Marines as their bodyguards, but they don’t defend the Corps when it is in trouble.
After the humiliating debacle in Basilan last July, Congressman Akbar added salt to the wound by criticizing the Corps in a privilege speech.
Only one congressman defended the Marine Corps from Akbar’s attack: Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin of Makati City.
